Art Practice B1.2: Breaking down artistic processes and elements of individual pieces.(Activity)

Everything that is created by humans has gone through a process to become a final product! This is true for art, houses, plastic, cars, computers, sandwiches, etc.
We call the step-by-step process of creating something an algorithm. In this activity, you will create an algorithm for a piece of art you will create. Then you will reverse engineer a piece of art by inferring the algorithm you perceive the artist took to create this piece of art.
Before we take a look at algorithms in creating a unique piece of art, let’s start with a Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich. Even though you have probably made a PB&J in the past, consider the step-by-step process (algorithm) used to create this sandwich. You will consider every little detail when it comes to the process of creating this sandwich.

Make a step-by-step list for someone to create a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich. For this algorithm, you can assume the creator is already sitting in front of all the materials they will need.
Now that you have created an algorithm for creating a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich, it is time to put it to the test! Switch algorithms with a partner and follow each other’s instructions.

What unexpected issue or difficulties did you encounter when following another’s algorithm?
Now that you have an understanding of how algorithms are used to create something, let’s try the same process backward. Take a look at the styrofoam cup art (styrogami) below, see if you can best estimate the step-by-step process (algorithm) the artist took to go from two styrofoam cups to what you see now. To achieve this, first focus on the specific details of the styrofoam cup art (styrogami) in order to better understand how it was constructed. This process of isolating small details is called abstraction.

Using your best judgment, make a step-by-step list that this artist followed to create this sculpture from two styrofoam cups.
Now that you have abstracted a finished piece of art into an algorithm of steps it is your turn to get creative and plan a design for your very own styrogami. Your task is to create a step-by-step algorithm in order to create a unique piece of styrogami that only uses styrofoam cups (maximum 4 cups) and hot glue.
Before you write your algorithm, you will make a prototype piece of art. While creating your prototype be sure to document your steps so that you will be able to document your algorithm later.

Now that you have your prototype and you understand how to work with the tools you needed to make styrogami it is time to sequence your thoughts into an algorithm that someone else could follow.
